How to Choose Your Wellington Wedding Photographer

How to Choose Your Wellington Wedding Photographer

Trying to find the right Wellington wedding photographer can feel like a huge task. But really, it is all about finding a visual storyteller who gets what your special day is about and can capture its true spirit. This guide walks you through exactly how to choose, what to ask, and what a good photographer is actually worth.

Why Book Early

The best wedding photographers book up 12 to 18 months in advance, particularly for peak season dates between November and April. Getting in early means you secure your first choice and often lock in current pricing. If your date is set, start your search as soon as the venue is confirmed.

What to Look For

When you are weighing up photographers, focus on these four things above all else:

  • A consistent style: Their editing and shooting approach should look consistent across different weddings, venues, and lighting conditions, not just in a handful of hero shots.
  • Full wedding galleries: Ask to see complete galleries from real weddings, start to finish, not only the curated highlights. This shows how they handle the whole day, including tricky light.
  • Genuine reviews: What do past couples say about the experience, not just the photos? Look for comments about how relaxed and organised the photographer was on the day.
  • A real connection: You will spend more time with your photographer than almost any other vendor. You need to feel comfortable and at ease with them.

Understanding Photography Styles

Knowing the main styles helps you describe what you actually want:

  • Documentary / candid: Unposed, natural moments captured as they happen. My own approach leans documentary, capturing the day as it really unfolds.
  • Traditional: Beautifully composed, directed portraits and group shots.
  • Fine art: Artistic, creative compositions with a distinctive editing signature.
  • Editorial: Polished, magazine-style imagery with a strong sense of styling and light.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

Before you commit, make sure you have asked:

  1. How many weddings do you shoot per year, and have you worked at my venue?
  2. Do you bring a second shooter, and what does that add?
  3. What is your backup equipment and backup photographer plan?
  4. Exactly what is included in each collection?
  5. When will we receive our gallery, and in what format?

That last question matters more than most couples realise. I deliver full galleries within 72 hours, against an industry norm of six to eight weeks, so you relive the day while it is still fresh. You can see how that works on my Wellington wedding photography page.

The Wellington Advantage

A photographer who knows Wellington and the wider region will be better equipped to handle whatever the day throws at them, from a southerly rolling in to the famous capital wind. That local knowledge means smoother logistics and better photos, whether you are marrying in the Wairarapa, on the Kapiti Coast, or right on the city waterfront. Strong local relationships with venues and other vendors make the whole day run more calmly.

Why It Is Worth the Investment

Professional wedding photography in New Zealand typically ranges from $4,000 to $7,000 for full-day coverage. That covers far more than the hours on the day: years of experience, professional gear and backups, and many hours of careful editing afterwards. Long after the flowers have wilted and the cake has been eaten, your photos are what remain, and they become more precious every year.
